Dutch Mudflats is a photographic series set in het Waddengebied, or ‘‘t Wad”, the vast coastal area in the north of the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark, shaped by extreme tidal movements. Here, the sea withdraws and returns by several meters, continuously redefining the boundary between land and water. The landscape is never fixed; it exists in a constant state of transition, open, exposed, and rhythmically governed by the tides.
Once a vital route for transport and trade, the mudflats were navigated by traditional flat-bottomed ships, vessels designed to endure both high and low tides. The series does not attempt to explain this place in words. Instead, the photographs speak for themselves, capturing an experience that is best understood by experiencing , rather than describing the vastness of the Wadden Sea.
