Goče

Goče is a village in the hills southwest of Vipava in the traditional Inner Carniola region of Slovenia.

In Goče near Saint Andrew's Church some of the old buildings are built so close together that the streets are barely 1 m wide. Apparantly, the houses are stringed along two main streets that cross each other in the shape of St Andrew's cross (X shape) as a peculiar homage to the village patron St Andrew.

It is said that the houses were built so compactly because the land belonged to the church, exempting the residents from military service.

The small church built on a hill above the village also belongs to this parish and is dedicated to Our Lady of the Snow

The stone village of Goče is a monument of Slovenian cultural heritage. I had a nice day walking in it together with Slovenian photographer Luka Esenko, to whom this is sort of his photographic backyard.
